Obesity Linked to Brain Size
A study has shown that the brain region which is in charge
of controlling impulses is smaller in obese teens. This study suggests that poor eating habits
and obesity are not caused due to a lack of self-control, but instead a brain
issue.
Research is further questioning whether obesity leads to the
small sized brain region or if it is a genetic condition in which the
individual is born with.
The study looked at 91 17 year old individuals. 37 of these
adolescents were at a normal weight, the other 54 were considered clinically
obese. Using MRI scans, researchers scanned the teens’ brains. The teens then
completed cognitive tests to determine and measure how well different areas of
the brain worked.
