FDA Denies Diet Pill
Federal health regulators of the FDA have denied the
approval of an experimental diet pill. The pill, known as Qnexa, promises the
most weight loss through pill form in over a decade. The FDA denied the
approval of the drug in its current form and asked for more study results and
information of health risks that are linked to the pill.
Qnexa’s company, Vivus Inc., plans to respond to the FDA in
as little as six weeks. Qnexa promises a
high level of weight loss in comparison to other similar drugs on the market. A
study previously conducted by Vivus Inc., showed that patients who took the
pill lost, on average, more than 10 percent total body mass.
Although the U.S. obesity rate is over 30 percent among
adults, public health officials and the FDA suggest a strict standard for safety
and are looking for a bit more proof of safety from Vivus Inc.
